Question: I am a 24 yr old man that has a good life, I've seemed to for the past year become an alcoholic (daily drinking). I really want to quit drinking for the sake of my life, and my health. Everything I have been reading says not to stop all at once.. what do I do?

Brief Answer:
it depends on physical dependance & quantity of intake

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

I really appreciate your decision to stop drinking.

For any deaddiction first and foremost step is to decide to quit. You have that motivation ,that is the best part.

If someone is physically dependent and taking alcohol daily, sudden stopping at all can cause some withdrawal features like sleep disturbance, tremors, decrease appetite, low mood and anxiety symptoms.

If your intake is since one year and daily , your body should be somewhat dependent on it.Depending upon quality and quantity of daily alcohol intake severity of withdrawal features vary. Some chances are there that you can stop without any medicines if quantity of intake is low.

You should go to psychiatrist/deaddiction specialist for detail evaluation and deaddiction treatment.

You can be given benzodiazepines like lorazepam or librium. Gradually these medicines dose is decreased and stopped. You may require indoor treatment if doctor think so.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further if needed.
I hope you will consult doctor soon and get rid of the habit.

Wishing you good health.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
