Suggest Ways To Use Fluorouracil Cream

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Sep 2016
Question: I have been prescribed Fluorouracil cream for a skin condition on my upper lip (mouth). It is difficult to apply as the lip is on the boundary to my mouth. I have to hold open my mouth for some time after application (cotton swab is used for application). How long do I keep the cream on the site before I can wipe it clean?

Brief Answer:
Ideally, you shouldn't wipe it clean for any reasons!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I understand your worries. This cream is ideally not supposed to be washed off. You are advised to apply enough to cover the entire area. Also, avoid getting it into the mouth or any other cavities/openings such as nose, ears, eyes, etc. I understand the inconvenience but unfortunately, this is certainly not going to be possible to wipe it off as this diminishes the efficacy and effectiveness of the drug because of insufficient time for contact, absorption and action.

I will suggest you bring this difficulty to your doctor's attention. He might want to consider administering this orally, though it will be met with other side effects as well.

In all, not to be wiped off until next application is due for continuity and best results. I wish you well and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
