Question : This question is for Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis. After your answer about Nexium, I stopped
taking it. Recently a doctor prescribed Meloxicam 7.5 mg for inflammation. She told me to take Nexium with it. I do not want to take Nexium. I talked to my pharmacist, she told me there were other drugs that were coated with a special coating that would not dissolve until in my digestive system. Can you tell me what they are?

Brief Answer:
no clinically useful difference!

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

let me start from the nexium issues. In my previous answer I pointed out that although there are some data suggesting a connection between nexium and AD there is no convincing evidence or scientifically accepted proof. This means that you can still use nexium if necessary, at least for short time periods like when taking NSAID (meloxicam is a NSAID).

I don't understand your pharmacist's statement. If she meant that there are NSAID that dissolve late then the answer is that it makes no difference regarding their side effects. NSAIDs may cause peptic ulcer even if taken intravenously. It's their systemic effect that causes the ulcers, not their presence in the stomach! I hope this is clear now...

If she was talking about nexium alternatives then their absorption is irrelevant to their side effects, so it doesn't matter either way... Alternatives (not proton-pump inhibitors that is) include ranitidine and other H2 receptor antagonists. Ranitidine can be taken twice daily (150mg each time, 300mg total per day).

I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!
