Question: if you are trying to stop taking Xanax should it be cold turkey or decrease dose over several days

You CANNOT stop Xanax cold turkey. This would result in withdrawal, and the risk of seizure and death.

You need to have a psychiatrist carefully decrease the dose and monitor you for signs of withdrawal. Decrease by no more than 20% every two weeks. Also there are several other parameters to be watchful for.
