Question : I have recovered from my depression since I have started getting back into my favourite activities. I feel 95% normal. The only impediment are the side-effects of the Pms-Escitalopram which include feeling dizzy and heavy when I am standing. When I'm seated or lying down I feel normal. The side-effects show up as soon as I stand. I'd like to stop taking this medication. How should I do so to minimize withdrawal symptoms? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
wean gradually from PMS-escitalopram

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are currently being treated for depression and feeling back to normal and wanting to wean from your medication. I would first ask that you consult with your regular doctor before initiating discontinuing your medication. We usually recommend staying on antidepressants for at least 6 months before stopping. If you have been given the go ahead I would have you start by reducing the pill by splitting it in half for 3 days then taking 1/2 tablet every other day for 3 additional days. You should have no withdrawal problems if you follow this weaning program

Thank you. I have been on the medication for about 13 months now so that criterion has been met.

I have an appointment with my psychiatrist in 3 weeks so I'll wait till then. At least now I know that it won't take 3 months to withdraw. Thank you.

I have had dizziness, tinnitus and a feeling of heaviness since I've been on this drug. How long might it take for these to go away?

PS: By the way this is a great service especially for Canadians who have to wait a long time for specialists.

Brief Answer:
Side effects resolve within a few weeks of stopping mediations

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for returning to HCM. The side effects you are experiencing should resolve fairly quickly after stopping the medication. Usually within a week but may be as long as 2 weeks.
