Question : Hi Doctor,
my husband broke , fractured his femur about 3 weeksgo. It was more like splendered, after surgery his mouth has been VERY sore. He's lost weight,do you have any suggestions

Dear Ma'am,

Sorry to hear about your husband. A sore mouth after surgery could be because of many factors. It can be due to the tube which was kept for surgery but it usually does not persist for three week. Antibiotics following surgery are the commonest cause for this problem and this is aggravated by a poor diet. You should start him on a multivitamin and that should resolve the problem within a few days.

Weight loss after surgery is quite common due to the surgical stress and a poor diet. He should be given a well balanced healthy diet and regular physiotherapy should be carried out.
