Question: My daughter in law has scalp swelling and hair loss occasionally. Now she has developed some dents in her scalp. Her dermatologist seems stumped. He has done a biopsy and blood test with no answers. Now she has a white vertical line that appears on her forehead. Her scalp is always red and tingly

Hi,

Thanks for your query.

The swelling of scalp and hair fall can be due to some sort of scalp affliction.

Also the number of dents on scalp may be on those parts that has been swollen.

To help you better there are few questions that need to be answered:-
1.When she gets the swelling of scalp is it painful?
2.Is the hair loss gross or localized bald patches?
3.Since the scalp is red and tingly is it painful to touch or while combing hairs?
4.Is there itching in scalp and see even if there is scaling of scalp?

Better if you can post a picture of the affected part if possible, you can upload the picture along with your query, please utilize the option provided on the right hand side of the page to attach reports.

If you can please write these details I will be able to help you better.

Awaiting your response.

Regards.

Her scalp is not painful but very tender. She sometimes feels a burning sensation. It isn't scaly, but red. She loses very small patches of hair. More hair loss is near the forehead. what would this white line be that appears on forehead? He acted as if that helped him. He did mention blood circulation to scalp being poor, but isnt' that always the case with hair loss?

Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

The symptoms like tenderness, redness, and occasional burning suggest that it is a sort of inflammation due to a possible infection of scalp.

There are many types of infections of hairs causing alopecia like:-
-Ringworm of scalp,
-Auto immune conditions like Lupus,
-Folliculitis decalvans.
Since even biopsy did not give any result it could be autoimmune problem with a added infection.

Presently she can take a course of antibiotics like Doxycycline or a course of Rifampicin which you need to discuss with her Dermatologist.

Local application of steroid may also help reduce the redness and tingling.

As for the white line a physical examination will be needed to explain it better so discuss with your doctor.

Please accept this answer if there is no further query.

Wishing her good health.

Regards
