Question : To be answered by Dr. Prof. XXXXXXX Saha,
Doctor Saha, this is Rosemarie Raia again. I am having a problem with numbness in my both feet and sometimes legs and now the bottom of my back and top of buttocks. You told me several days ago to take the vitamin B-12 which I have been doing.

This is frightening me. I am having difficulty walking. I go to a physical therapist two days a week and now a chiropractor three days a week. I have been to the chiropractor four times . They both seem to think they can help me but I do not feel like I am making progress.
Is there anythings else you can suggest for me to do?

Brief Answer:
Response takes time

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking once again.

Unfortunately response to such treatment is not rapid and takes time. Age related problems take time to resolve and you would need to be patient. I think that you should continue to visit both your physical therapist and chiropractor. They should be able to help you.

Please be patient.

Dr. Saha,
Today the chiropractor said he would like me to see an orthopedic doctor. I have an appointment on Monday. I am going to take an mri on Thursday. I hope they can shed some light on my condition and I also will try to be patient. It is difficult when you are in pain to be patient. I cannot walk very well also.

Brief Answer:
Due to compressive neuropathy or peripheral neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,

Yes, it would be good to see an Orthopedician.
Compression or the nerve or peripheral neuropathy can quite likely cause such numbness.

Feel free to follow-up whenever the need be...

Dr. Saha, if it is compression on the nerve or peripheral neuropathy what is the course of action. What should be done to relieve the pain and numbness.

Brief Answer:
Depends on the severity

Detailed Answer:
You are already taking vitamin B12 for peripheral neuropathy.

For compression neuropathy the degree or location of the compression matters. Physical therapy should take care of it at least until a certain level. Beyond that traction may be needed. Surgery may be needed for extreme cases.

Dr. Saha, I had an MRI of the lumbar spine today. It was done in an open MRI sitting up.
I took the MRI cd to my chiropractor who looked at it and said that a disc was pressing on the spinal cord.
I have an appointment with the orthopedic doctor on Monday.
The chiro said it may require surgery. I have many health problems, heart, elevated pulmonary artery sys
tolic pressure, hbp, occipital neuralgia, Are there any other options?

Brief Answer:
Surgery would be the best option

Detailed Answer:
In your case surgery is the best (and rather the easiest option). It would be effective and you can go for it. There are other options like vertebral traction but I do not suppose that would be quite effective in your case.

Is a slipped disc the same as a bulging disc or herniated disc.

I also have a virus now for which I am taking doxycycline. I have a terrible diaherra. what can I take for that? that would be safe.

Brief Answer:
Yes they are the same

Detailed Answer:
Doxycycline is for bacteria and is ineffective in case of viruses.

Diarrhea could be due to contaminated hands or could be due to some gastrointestinal infections. These infections are self correcting and unless there is bloody stool associated, treatment with antibiotics is not required. Irrespective of treatment it takes 3-7 days for relief. ORS (oral rehydration solution) is the mainstay of treament. It may be taken 50-100ml/kg body weight over 4 hours depending on the hydration level. Thereafter it can be taken in lesser amounts.

Feel free to write back.
