Question : Two weeks ago yesterday, my boyfriend and I had sex. I have had the nexoplanon birth control implant since January. We didn’t use a condom but he didn’t finish on the inside. I am always nervous about pregnancy but yesterday I took a pregnancy test and it said not pregnant. Are the results accurate? Did I wait long enough?

                                    Brief Answer:
You are protected, no need to do pregnancy tests.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
You are having nexplanon since January so you have good protection for 5 years if you keep it. There is no need to do pregnancy tests also you had double protection since he didn't finish inside you.
The results are accurate, there is no need to do another test and you are not pregnant.
Just to know, a pregnancy test should be done at least 5 days after the day of the expected period.
Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

This birth control has made my periods irregular. So I don’t know when it will begin again. Does that affect the results of the pregnancy test?

                                    Brief Answer:
No need to do pregnancy test at all.
Detailed Answer:
It is true that nexplanon will make periods irregular, absent for months or even years . Spotting may be present also during this time in several occasions.
You don't need to do pregnancy test if you are on nexplanon because you are protected.
