Dysfunctional uterine bleeding is due to irregularities in ovulation or due to
primary disorder of endometrium ( lining of uterus)

Irreglarities in ovulation can be due to:

1. Physiologic ( Adolescence, Perimenapause)
2. PCOS
3. Stress, weight change, excessive exercise etc
4. Endocrine ( Thyroid, Prolactin disorders)
5. Rarely Kidney and liver disease

Primary disorder of the lining of uterus is due to decreased endometrial vascular tone. Rarely endometrial infection can cause dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

For example, if the endometrium is excessively thickened Dilatation and curettage of the endometrium is done and the material is examined under microscope to find out the problem.
