Question: Hello doctor! A family member has had major spinal surgery about three weeks ago (document attached), and is now unable to walk. This event followed a successful consultations with other doctors at your service.
The surgeon has provided the list of physiotherapy procedures (document attached), and we would like to know if there is a much more specific or detailed list of special exercises and other steps that need to be done in the effort to try to restore his ability to walk.
Are you able to help us with such a list, or refer us to a specialist that provides online consultation regarding the exercises that are especially important given this particular operation and the loss ability to walk?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Dr. Spaho, and my apologies for this late reply. Your service did not send a notification to my email and I saw your reply only today on checking to see what had happened to my question.

When you ask for more documents, I am wondering whether you received the one that is attached. It contains the MRI report, what the surgeon proposed to do, what the surgeon actually did, and the surgeon's list of needed therapy procedures. If you have already seen these documents, can you suggest what other information we could try to get for you? Thanks in advance.

I forgot to tell you that the surgeon insisted that he not moved from his home to be taken to a rehabilitation center (several miles away) because his condition was too delicate.

Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

I saw the MRI reports and the surgeon's proposed treatment because these documents were not accessible in the first question.

It was a large intradural tumor of the spine that was removed, so, for now, I agree with the surgeon's opinion about domestic physical therapy.

Besides the physical therapy procedures proposed by the Doctor, I would suggest additional TENS stimulation of the muscles of the legs for 2 or three weeks, for a faster recovery.

After another 2 weeks, I think the condition will allow the patient to be taken to a rehab center for a complete rehabilitation program.

I hope this helps.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

Thanks for your very helpful response Dr. Spaho. I may have a follow up question after my family examines what additional supports are available to help the rehabilitation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

Best rehabilitation in such cases is self-movement by the patient, those movements that he is able to perform.

Getting help from a Psychologist also may be necessary if the patient seems to have emotional issues regarding his condition.

I hope this helps.

Take care.
