Question: Welcome to 'Ask a Doctor'. Please type your question here...I had a lap dance and was paranoid I could of got hiv o went in for a blood test negative for hiv positive for mono any way it could still be hiv I read online there can be false positive mono and can be caused by hiv

False positive for mono not false negative.i had a negative hiv test. Positive mon test. Could it be hiv.

I’m wondering if my positive for mono could be false and could really be a sign of hiv even though I tested negative for hiv 4 weeks after exposure

Is a very low probability.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
There is a rare percent that can show false positive for mono.
I think the symptoms are caused by mono since it come positive not by HIV.
I think it would be better if you get retested for HIV 1and 2.
The false positive or negative results in tests are of a very low percentage and is a very low probability that it can be false positive for mono and false negative for HIV too.
Also a complete blood count in case of mono shows elevated lymphocyte and monocyte count while HIV shows low leucocytes count.
