Question : Well we are thoroughly confused. My wife has chronic knee pain from 3 TKRs and staph/equine infection. She had tried everything with no effective relief. Recently a nice little PA at her kidney DR's office prescribed Voltaren and Licocaine patches. In all the written accompanying literature it states don't use if one has kidney problems and if one is taking a blood thinner like coumandin, which she does and is. Also a nurse said the warnings pertain to oral doses not gel and patches. SO what is the answer? Is it of for her to take these NSAIDS?

                                    Brief Answer:
Gel can be used.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The gel and patches do have very mild systemic effects and the gel can be easily applied in case of a renal problem. The patches do have a mild systemic and sustained effect and should be used with caution as she is on blood thinners. You can get her bleeding profile and INR checked after and before applying the patch.
I hope this answers your query.
