Question: My husband has Lung Cancer stage IIIB and COPD. After his last CT scan, the doctor said his lungs are looking like 'honey comb' and you could see this on the scan. I haven't hear that before. What does that mean? are his lungs getting worse?

Brief Answer:
PET scan suggested.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

After hearing your husband's history since he has lung cancer stage III B and COPD and had chemotherapy, radiation, opdivo and anoro his last CT scan is showing honeycomb appearance it could be due to a condition called interstitial lung disease.

It is caused by exposure to asbestos, silica dust, talc, coal dust, grain dust and bird proteins.

Treatment of the condition can be made by corticosteroids like prednisone and methylprednisolone which reduce the activity of the immune system.

This reduces the amount of inflammation in the lungs and the rest of the body.

You can consult your local doctor regarding it.

To see whether his lungs are getting worse and since he has lung cancer I would advise him to do a PET scan.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.

Dear Dr. Monish De,
Thank you for the info. He has not had a PET scan for about a year and a half. They always seem to give more info. The insurance company does not always want to pay for PET scan, they would rather do a CT scan. Since he going on medicare May 1st since he qualified for Soc.Sec.Disability. It is even harder to get things approved & out of pocket more money.
Original they gave him only a year to live and he's almost at 4 years. I realized we have been given extra time.
Again thank you for your answer.
Sincerely XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
HRCT scan of the chest.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Since the insurance company does not pay for PET scan I would advise him to do a high-resolution CT scan of the chest (HRCT of the thorax) and compare it with the last once to see whether his lungs are getting worse.

You can consult a radiologist for its comparison.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards,
Dr. Monish De, Oncologist
