What Are Chances Of Survival In Stage 4 Lung Cancer?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Apr 2014
Question: My husband (66 Years) has stage 4 lung cancer with mets to the brain. The 2 lower lobes of his right lung were removed in 2010. Mets were discovered in 2011/Inoperable he had Radiation treatment and Radiation Surgery and they have been dormant (Nutralized). During this he also had some Skin Cancer removed and developed Severe Arthitis down his neck and spine. He has MRI & Full Body CT's every 2-3 months depending on what is going on and all seems to be stable, he has had Bone Scans due to symptoms to rule out the cancer has spread to the bone, Emphasima also exists. Prior to all of this, maybe 10 years ago he was diagnosed with CLL. Never really active and watched through blood tests annually. Over the last couple of month his blood counts started to change, he has had staph infection over the last couple of weeks and was hospitalized for treatment. He started Chemo today for the CLL. At last review His WBC were at 124,000, Red BC were down to Aneamic Level, Platlettes were down, Spleen was enlarged to twice it's size and lymph nodes under the chin and both arms are swollen. He was put on steroids while they addressed the staph to help reduce the swelling. Having surpassed all the odds what are his chances of surving this latest turn with the CLL?

Brief Answer: 60% remission rates, survival see below. Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. I am so sorry to hear about all that your husband is experiencing right now. I must admit it is a very difficult and challenging situation for him as a patient all his loved ones. He very much need enormous support and love to stay through some of his very distressing moments. His chances are in no way different from that in the general population which stands at about 60%. However, given the other disease conditions that he has, he may not be able to live long. While remission rate are sole determined by the cancer type, survival is greatly influenced by the overall health status of the client and you would agree with me that your husband is not in good health. It is no good news. Your husband may not be able to live for long again. I think he has already defied medicine by living with a metastatic lung cancer for more than 6months. I hope he gets to do it again by defying all that points towards a poor outcome. I am so sorry for what he is going through. Remission is at 60% and prognosis further lower because of history of cancer and the current staph infection. I call on your to do your possible best being the best wife ever and hope for the best while fearing the worse. I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and feel free to ask for more information if need be. Dr. Ditah, MD.
