Question : I have bronchial asthma since 2003, when I was 48 years, Since then I have been advised by my family doctor friend, and taking Aerocort forte once a day, or now about 2-3 times a day, when ever I feel little uneasiness with breathing. I am not having any problem as such at the moment, and feel I am able to control my problem. I have not been consulting any doctor for this problem now and then, as I have no serious problem.
My question is:1) Is there a need to consult a specialist doctor regularly for this purpose, and if yes, how often? 2) Does Aerocortfort has any problem (side effect) since I am using it for almost 12+ years now and still continuing.
Shall very much appreciate your advice?

Brief Answer:
Yes you should definitely consult pulmonologist.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Asthma is chronic Pulmonary disease.
It needs regular treatment and regular follow up with pulmonologist.
You should visit pulmonologist every three monthly.
PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) is must, every six monthly to see for functions of lung and control of asthma.
So consult pulmonologist atleast twice yearly with PFT monitoring.
Aerocort is having levosalbutamol and beclomethasone.
Levosalbutamol is short acting beta 2 agonist (SABA). Beclomethasone is less potent inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).
So for maintainance therapy it is better to take long acting beta 2 agonist (LABA) and more potent ICS.
LABA and ICS combination are available. So discuss about starting this combination instead of aerocort for better control of asthma.
And no need to worry, because these inhaled drugs are safe for long term use.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
