What Are The Chances Of HIV After Having Protected Sex?

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Apr 2015
Question: Hi doctor, in order to transmit hiv must the vaginal liquid be in huge amount? Or does it requires only a little amount to infect but i have protected sex with both oral and intercourse. I have went to the doctor to do do a elisa blood test and herpes simplex blood test today and has been 1 month 1 week post exposure. Doctor, if my hiv blood test came back negative. Can i trust it for 90%? And for herpes blood test if it is negative, is it ruled out? Thanks!

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
There is no concern for you if you have used condoms for both vaginal and oral sex.

Replying to your question, the chances of HIV infection being transmitted depends on the viral load. This is the concentration of HIV virus in the blood or fluid through which the infection is transmitted. Huge amount of vaginal fluids from an infected woman will have higher viral load and therefore more chances of transmission. Th chances of HIV transmission through a little amount are small.

Regarding the HIV testing, if you have got third generation ELISA test done then the usual protocol is to do the test at 90 days and 180 days and both reports being negative confirm that there is no HIV infection. Third generation ELISA requires to be tested at 90 days and 180 days.

If you took the fourth generation rapid test for HIV then doing the test at one month and one week and getting a negative result is confirmatory and no repeat testing is required. This test has high accuracy at one month.

For herpes blood tests, at the end of 3 months the test is 70 percent accurate. There is concern for herpes only if your partner had any oral or genital rashes.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
