Question : On November 15, 2014, I engaged in sex anal sex with a guy I met. I am the insertive partner. We did use a condom for the duration of anal sex. However, I took the condom off, and inserted it into his rectum ever so briefly, in and and out motion, as blinking your eyes twice . We also engaged in oral sex. As I was about to flush the condom down the toilet, I noticed blood on the condom.. I freaked out because I didn't know his hiv status. He did tell me he is hiv positive for about 8 months, he's not on any meds, because his doctor said he didn't need them. Now I'm thinking I'll be hiv positive just from that brief exposure. Plus having oral sex with him. I can't eat, sleep or concentrate in school. What are my chances of being infected? I plan to test myself in 3 weeks and then 3 months and then 6 months there after. Could I please get an opinion from a doctor that specializes in HIV to answer my questions?

Brief Answer:
The chances are slim!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I understand the stress that comes with feeling exposed to someone who is HIV positive. Your reaction is totally normal and of course every one else in your situation would react similarly.

Why are your chances slim? The greater duration of the intercourse was with protection and he is not on treatment which means his viral load is still well controlled. Looking at your information, you are on post exposure prophylaxis which makes this even more less likely that you could get infected from this episode. All these should help you get relax and follow up with testing.

Yes, your plan for testing is good. Follow up with it and keep me posted a you navigate through this demanding and very stressful moments. In my experience, only a tiny proportion of persons would become positive with an exposure similar to yours.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me and ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
