What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission After Uprotected Sex For Breif Period?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: I had protective anal sex with a guy I met., however I took off the condom to masturbate, when I took the condom off, I inserted my bare penis inside in for all of a sec..in then out. I withdrew my penis and continued to masturbate. As I flushed the condom down the toilet I noticed what appeared to be specks of blood. Two days later he told me he was HIV positive ,not on meds because his doctor said he didn't need any. He's been HIV positive for 8 months. With that being said... what are my chances of being infected with HIV? I WENT TO THE ER and am taking Truvada post exposure.

Brief Answer:
No worries, your chances slim, respect medication

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

I understand how disturbing this could be. It is very good news you realized so early and are lucky you are on post exposure medication.

These medications are really very effective today that when taken properly, success rates could exceed 97%. This means that only 3 persons in a 100 exposed persons, when started early on post exposure prophylaxis will eventually develop or remain HIV positive.

Another good thing with you is that you of course inserted only once. It is true that this still constitutes a risk, which of course is very very small.

I do not think you need be bothered. To me your chances are really slim, especially if you take your medication properly.

Thanks and kind regards as I wish the best of health.

Thank you very much. Most of the people that I know, who are HIV positive, have told me the same answer as you told me . that because I was the insertive person, and only inserted it briefly, as fast as blinking your eyes twice, that it was a low low risk. I forgot to mention that him and I gave each other oral sex. Because he is HIV positive, I was more scared that I could be infected by oral sex through that route. I didn't taste pre-cum but could I become infected via oral sex since he is hiv positive? I'm very glad that we did use condom up until I inserted my penis briefly and withdrew it. Since there were blood on the condom, if there were blood on my urethra, couldn't that make me infected? I'm getting tested in 3 weeks and then 3 months if the initial test is negative. I'm aware that antibodies can build up within 3 weeks after exposure. Thank you very much for your time.

Brief Answer:
No real worries, chances slim or very slim.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up.

You are right through the oral route, there are chances of transmission too. They are however really slim. Even if they were, the fact that you started post exposure prophylaxis this early puts you on a very good position of nit having the infection.

No worries for now. I for one think the chances are really slim for you as I wish you just the best.

Enjoy and regards,
