default
Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2015
Question: I wore an underwear of a HIV infected person only once 5-6 years back and the duration of wearing the underwear was very small and as far as I remember it was clean when I wore it ? My question is am I at the risk of HIV or STI ? I don' feel any health complications.

Few months back I had the problem of breathlessness and I have been diagnosed with allergic rhinitis (increased Ige level) nothing else. I have had dust allergy. Does it have anything

Brief Answer:
HIV transmission through fomites is negligible

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

HIV can not be viable outside the body fluids for not more than few seconds. It can not be transmitted through fomites like shorts or underwear (duration not matters much). STD organisms are also highly fragile, not live outside the body and not transmitted through casual contact. so the chances of transmission of HIV through wearing underwear of an infected individual is negligible.
Your symptoms of breathlessness and rhinitis are not likely related to HIV.

Thank you for the detailed reply..!

Two things I want to ask.
1. I was negligent enough when this happened, Do you suggest me to get tested on the basis of this act. I was on mental displease when I come to know about HIV and STI's.

2. Does my increased IGE level in blood can affect the HIV tests results if I go for tests ?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
A negative HIV test will relieve unnecessary mental tension

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

I can understand your concern.
1.Though a test is not really indicated, I would recommend you to go for a HIV test and rule out the remote possibility of HIV, so that you will get relieved from your mental agony. Otherwise any illness in future (even a head ache) would likely be attributed to HIV possibility and you would have mental confusion and torture.
2.A raise in Ig E in no way would affect the HIV test result.
