What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Menstrual Blood?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Apr 2015
Question: I had vaginal sex with a prostitute, protected. However, she was menstruating. Some of her blood spilled over my pelvis. I didn't realize that until I got home, while getting undressed. I noticed dry blood and then I showered. Luckily, I guess, the skin was intact, no abrasions or sores of any kind, what are my chances of being infected?

Just before forgetting, I wonder the chances of getting infected by HIV.

Brief Answer:
Highly unlikely if there was no contact of her fluid with yours

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. Chances of infection are reduced to minimal or you can say none IF there is no contact of body fluids between two persons. If her fluids get in contact with your blood, only then infection spreads including HIV. As in your case you had protected sex(assuming condom was also intact) and also dried blood on your skin also didn't come incontact with your blood so its highly unlikely for infection to occur.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!

Another piece of information which might help with your response is that I met her 3 months ago and gained her confidence, so I asked her to get a rapid - oraquick text (before having vaginal sex) which resulted negative, she took it about a month ago.

Thank you for your reply. My concern is that according to the CDC, HIV cannot penetrate intact skin, so no need for PEP even for clinicians who might be exposed to HIV over intact skin; however, it says that it will depend on how blood has been prolonged in the body.It took me for about an to realize the blood over my pelvis. On the other hand, I heard that HIV needs a direct host to infect and it's not an airborne virus.

1 Knowing that my partner tested HIV negative, as I mentioned above, might you say that it would be almost impossible to get infected?

2 Should I be worried about this minimal exposure to blood?

Thank you again

it took me for about an hour? Sorry I missed mentioning

Yes, condom was intact, I am sure about that!

Brief Answer:
Chances are negligible

Detailed Answer:
Hello

thank you for the follow-up query.

Yes HIV spread needs a direct contact(as i mentioned earlier). You also did a good step by asking her to undergo quick test and it came out -ve SO chances of infection are almost negligible. I would suggest you to relax and carry out with your normal daily life.
