What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Unprotected Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Sep 2014
Question: Good evening,

on Sunday night, I had received brief unprotected oral sex (less than 30 seconds) from a woman whom I met earlier that evening. We then had vaginal intercourse, but I used a condom. I did not ejaculate, nor come close. We stopped because there was a significant amount of blood coming from her vagina. I immediately showered and scrubbed the area, but Monday morning I had some burning at the tip of my penis. This has now evolved into steadily uncomfortable sensation around the end of my penis. It is also worth noting that this was at the end of a 3 day drinking binge, and I was fairly intoxicated at the time of the encounter. I had masturbated without lubrication twice earlier that day as well, so I'm wondering if my penis is just sore from that? I went to my doctor this morning, who ordered a Chlamydia test via a urine sample. I, however, have convinced myself that I have herpes and I didn't sleep last night. I discovered what I believe is a canker sore inside my mouth (inside my lower lip), but of course my mind convinced me that this was oral herpes. I cannot focus at work whatsoever, and the more I research this topic online the more I convince myself it's herpes. What are your thoughts? Do you think I have herpes? Is there anything I can do to put my mind at ease?

Brief Answer:
Oral sex carries a low risk for HIV/STD.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.
Your vaginal exposure is a protected one. So with the unprotected oral sex, your risk for HIV/STD are very much less.
Through an unprotected oral sex, yeast infection and a Herpes type 1 infection are more likely than other STDs. As a recipient of oral sex from a woman, the chances of getting Herpes infection in your oral activity is more unlikely. So your oral ulcer might not be due to Herpes ulcer.
Vigorous masturbation twice and your alcoholic intoxication could be able to produce the burning tip of penis and uncomfortable sensation. Yeast infection is also to be ruled out.
Follow the advice of your Physician you will be alright soon.

Thank you for your answer. The pain is not too severe, and feels like it's underneath the glans (I am circumsized), so as my penis is flacid it feels like it's covered. The pain will subside at random intervals, but becomes aggravated again when I touch it (which is difficult not to do). I am tempted to go back to my physician, although not a lot has changed since I saw him earlier this morning. There are no ulcers or visible lesions. I am still not at ease that this is not herpes, and I fear I will not sleep again tonight

Brief Answer:
Inflammation of glanspenis-Infection or irritation

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

Genital Herpes is unlikely as you have no ulcers or blisters. So you need not to worry about the same.
Is your glans penis swollen or red? Mild inflammation of glans penis (head of penis) may be the reason for your problem. Possibility of yeast is there. Otherwise mild abrasions or irritation can cause such symptoms. If it is very mild can settle spontaneously. Don't apply soaps or antiseptic lotions. Frequent wash with clean water is sufficient. If it persists, consult your physician, he will examine you and guide you for further treatment.

Do you feel genital herpes is unlikely even though the sexual contact happened only 48 hours ago? The pain began over 24 hours ago, but there are still no signs of any lesions. Does this indicate that they likely won't appear, and that this is from something else?

There seems to be an overall feeling of warmth down there, but that may be a normal occurrance. I have a feeling where I constantly need to urinate, but very little comes out. I'm also having some abdominal pain, but I have also had bad gas over the past few days which could account for that. My Chlamydia test came back negative, is that a good thing? I was almost hoping it was some other STD so that it wasn't Herpes.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms are due anxiety.Consult your physician.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome once again.
I can understand your anxiety. Don't imagine odd things. Herpes can occur even after week if you got infected. But till you get any symptoms for any STD, there is no meaning in worrying. Most of the tests also would take time to appear in presence of an infection. All your symptoms like frequency in urination, general warmness, abdomen pain may be due to your anxiety.
As you had a protected vaginal sex and the unprotected oral sex carries a low risk, you need not worry much. Meet a Dermatologist or a Physician and get his/her guidance for investigations. Till then you have nothing to worry as far as you have no definite symptoms of STDs.
