What Are The Chances Of TB Relapse?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Jan 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

My mother had TB 21 years ago. She stopped TB treatment after she had no symptoms. The duration of her treatment is around 2-3 months with 2 drugs (rifampin and another drug she did not remember, I guess it is most likely isoniazid). My mother is 62 years old now and she does not have other major conditions. She did not have TB recurrence after her first treatment.

I learned that insufficient TB treatment may lead to relapse and drug-resistance. I want to know what is my mother's chance of having TB relapse, and if she have active TB again, what is her chance of having drug resistance TB.

I read some papers on TB recurrences. All the papers I found are on short-term relapse. Are there any papers on long term relapse rate of TB treatment? If there are, can you tell me the title of the papers and the venue whether the papers are published?

Thanks a lot for the help.

Brief Answer:
Tuberculosis statistics differ from country to country.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,

Thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
But no need to worry much.

Answer to your 1st question.
Chances of having TB relapse in your mother's case is not more than 3-4%. But this is not true for all. It depends mainly on
1. Area where your mother is residing.
2. Any immuno compromised state if present or not. If present then relapse rate can be high.

Answer to your 2nd question.
If she develops tuberculosis then chances of drug resistant tuberculosis is 16-17%. Again this will depend on locality. In XXXXXXX chances will be high as tuberculosis is endemic in XXXXXXX

I am giving these numbers according to guidelines of government of XXXXXXX for the treatment of tuberculosis and from the textbook of tuberculosis by XXXXXXX and XXXXXXX
It may not be the same or even lesser in your country.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease. So disease burden will be different in different countries.
It can not be the same world wide.
So please let me know, where is your mother living?

Brief Answer:
statistics may be same as in XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question.
I think statistics are almost same as in XXXXXXX
As china and XXXXXXX have a lot of similarities.
Like population, status of the people, their living style etc.
So I think most of the percentages and probability of relapse and drug resistant TB will be the same of XXXXXXX
So, I advice not to worry much. Just ask her to eat healthy and stay fit.
No need to worry much for release and drug resistant TB.
Hope I have solved your query.
If you are not having further queries, please close the conversation and rate the answer.
Wishing good health to your mother.
Thanks.
