Brief Answer:
Better to be started on medications

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Before explaining you the need of medications let me tell you facts about diabetes treatment

1. Diabetes is a disease that has to be controlled at the earliest or else serious complications may come in future.

2. Diabetes medications wont affect your kidney of cardiac functions In fact they improve it. There is no dependance

3. Earlier control of diabetes is associated with better control in future

4. Lifestyle modifications are good but it wont be enough in a majority of patients. Once you drop off from lifestyle modifications, your sugars start creeping up.

The ideal diabetic control at your age is a fasting blood glucose less than 130 mg/dl after food less than 180 mg/dl and an HbA1C less than 7%. If you can achieve that with lifestyle modifications that is good. Diet control include frequent low calorie meals with more fibers. It will be 3 major meals + 4 snacks a day. Exercise - aerobic exercise 30-45 minutes a day will be enough.

If your parameters are not in this cut off (which is your case) it is always better to start on medications. If you are having a busy lifestyle metformin (what your doctor has suggested) of newer drugs like gliptins will be good after consulting your doctor. They are relatively free of side effects.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
