Question: My son is 1 year old he weighs 8.7 kg and is 74 cm in height. He hasn't started walking on his own and doesn't have any teeth yet. We were advised to give him calcimax p 5 ml thrice daily during our last visit to doctor.we are already giving him calshine p , oravit and c pink(iron drops) .5 ml each. I am concerned about overdose of calcium and vitamin d as he is formula fed ( drinks about 550 ml of similac formula). Will this cause overdose of vitamin and calcium?

Brief Answer:
Developmental assessment is still needed

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. I can assure you that your child will not get overdose of calcium or vitamin D as the excess is simply not absorbed.

A child is supposed to be able to stand by one year of age. Walking may come thereafter. Teething usually starts at 6 months of age. So, this certainly counts as developmental delay. In such a case a closer look is essential. It might not be a good idea to remain under the follow up of a doctor who merely stops at the use of supplements like these. A developmental evaluation is essential. A careful look is needed to identify neurodevelopmental risk factors. So, get a second opinion.

Visit a dentist. He/she can check if underlying teeth have developed.

There is a child development specialist in the clinic who routinely checks our baby during vaccinations. He has achieved all is milestones till date. He babbles, points to things, responds to name, identifies more than 10 of his toys by name , waves bye bye, says mama, and walks holding on to furniture.what neurobiological assessment are you suggesting doctor? Is it normal for babies to start teething as late as 18 months.i can see his teeths in gum,but they are not cutting through. He has been biting on stuffs from 4 months.

Brief Answer:
Dental consultation suggested.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for clarifying. Sorry for not being able to respond faster. It is good to hear that the developmental evaluation is otherwise fine. In that case I would insist you not to worry and in such a case I would not suggest changing your doctor.

About the eruption of teeth, usually it starts at 6 months but may sometimes may be delayed even if the teeth have already been formed under the gums. The problem arises when the development of teeth (unseen, as it is under the gums) is not proper. You need to see a dentist to confirm that things are fine. It is not normal for teething to be delayed upto 18 moths age.

Thank you for the reply doctor. My only concern was about calcium and vitamin overdose as he is formula fed.He drinks around 550 ml of similac advanced stage 2 formula daily and eats solids for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Do I need to give him all these calcium ,iron and vitamin supplements as formula is already fortified with them? Doesn't overdose of calcium cause kidney troubles?

Brief Answer:
Taking plenty of water and fluids is essential.

Detailed Answer:
I do not think that overdose of calcium would be a problem as the excess supplement is simply flushed down through urine. However, if water intake is inadequate, kidney problems may result. Simple intake of plenty of fluids should resolve the issue.

I doubt if taking calcium or vitamin supplements is needed. Your dentist could better comment on the situation based on the present situation of teeth. Otherwise I do not feel these supplements essential.
