Statins are first line drugs to reduce cholesterol but they have poor patient acceptability due to muscle pain and myalgia.
Other are as under....
1) Niacin which is vitamin B (also known as nicotinic acid) available commercially in high doses.It lowers LDL cholesterol and raises HDL cholesterol.
2)“Another group "bile acid resin” drugs or “bile acid sequestrants" which work inside intestine, binds to bile from the liver and prevent it from being absorbed back into your blood.
Bile has cholesterol as the main constituent so these drugs decrease the blood cholesterol.For example cholestyramine and Colesevelam.
3)A different type of drug, ezetimibe lowers LDL cholesterol by blocking cholesterol absorption in your small intestine.
5)Fibrates are the drugs which reduce triglycerides example Fenofibrate and Gemfibrozil.
6)The latest Drug introduced in clinical practice are PCSK9 Inhibitors.Whenever,lifestyle modifications and statin treatment fail,they are used.They block a protein called PCSK9 to make it easier for the body to remove cholesterol from blood.They are mainly used in inherited genetic condition called familial hypercholesterolemia that makes it hard to bring down their cholesterol level.Examples include Alirocumab and Evolocumab.
They appear generally safe and well tolerated but as they have been newly introduced,their side effects need to be established.
Their cost is the main limiting issue.
Fenugreek,high fiber diet,Apple cidar vinegar,Fish oil,Garlic and ginseng are natural ways to reduce cholesterol.
