default
Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: I fell on my knee on concrete..I stayed off of it for a week where I used the r.i.c.e. Method..I had it checked by an ortho who took X-rays but found nothing broken. I went back to work where I have to stand most of the day. I returned to the ortho because my leg continued to hurt..I was able to walk but could not bend it..Ithe ortho ordered an MRI and the results were as followed 25 x14x9 undisplaced fracture posterior tibial plateau..containing intact insertion all footprint of the Plc ..marked marrow edema surrounds fracture. Fracture is in up displaced anatomical position without displacement. Plc is not torn or redundant acl normal no abnormal tibial translation..I do have a shallow horizontal tear body segment medial meniscus normal. I have moderate knee effusion no loose body or significant pica..should I be bearing any weight on this..should I be wearing a brace..can I wear a 2 inch heel....how long does this take to heal..should I have my leg up elevated when not working..is it ok to cross my legs..when can I exercise..doc wants to operate on tear..do I have to have that surgery..will this set me up for arthritis on that knee...

Brief Answer:
Needs rest of 4 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Your fracture is just one week old. This needs rest to heal well. You have to use a knee brace or a cast for at least 4 weeks. Avoid weight bearing on the leg as much as you can. Say no to heels. You can keep the leg elevated while resting. This will help in decreasing edema and pain.
Do not cross the legs. Immediate surgery is not needed. Brace and rest for 4 weeks will help in healing of the tear also. Exercise is needed after 4 weeks after the fracture has healed well.
Improper healing can cause arthritis at a later stage. It is best to keep the immobilized and let it heal.
I hope this answers your query.

Actually my fall occurred 3 weeks ago this Thursday..I was off of it for a week then I have been back to work for two weeks..I stand a lot at my job..is this going to slow down the healing..will it make the fracture larger..I will wear the brace full time now..is the size of the fracture large for it to heal..will I be able to use my elliptical again..does this happen very often with just a fall..I am concerned because it still has swelling and is hard to bend..you have been so helpful..thanks so much!!

Brief Answer:
It will heal with rest.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Standing and walking will delay the healing. Since the fracture is undisplaced, it will heal with rest and brace.
The swelling will gradually subside and you will be able to bend it again. Please do not worry.
Hope my answer is helpful.
