What Are The Repercussions Of Accidental Ingestion Of Plastic By A Child?

Question: I have a question about possible aspiration. Yesterday my son was drinking a bottle. We give him the similac ready to feed 8 oz. bottles. They have a plastic wrapper around them. Usually when my son is done with a bottle, he will throw it on the ground. Yesterday he was on the floor in his play pen drinking his bottle while i was cleaning, and i heard him cough a few times. It lasted for about 10 seconds so i scooped him up. When i was holding him, he was happy and playful, but he was drooling a lot which i didnt think much of because he's teething. A minute later, i saw something come out of his mouth with his drool. It stuck to his shirt, so i picked it off and saw that it was a small piece of the plastic wrapper from the bottle! I picked up the bottle, and there was a small piece missing from the bottle! The part that came out of his mouth was about the size of a XXXXXXX and there was another small piece missing. I looked everywhere for it but couldnt find it. I was worried that he either swallowed it or aspirated it. I know it will pass if he swallowed it, but what if he aspirated it? Would he be showing symptoms by now? What would those symptoms be? Ive attached a picture of the piece that was missing. The little piece on the table by the bottle is what he drooled out, which fits into half of the piece thats missing off the bottle.

Brief Answer:
Might not be aspiration

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

It indeed looks like there is a piece of plastic missing however it is more likely to have been swallowed rather than aspirated. If the plastic piece was aspirated he would be either breathless or continuously coughing. I suggest you to watch out for the plastic in his stools over the next 48 hours.
If the child is otherwise playful and has no symptoms then dont worry about it

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Regards
