What Are The Risks Of Methamphetamine Abuse During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: Hello, unfortunately I am a recovering meth addict and unfortunately I have slipped twice during my first trimester. I am not a heavy user and have been infrequently using over the past 4 years. My use is once every month or so but it is something I want to beat as I don't want to raise a child in that environment. I have arranged to begin seeing a counsellor and have told my partner about what has happened. He is very disappointed but is supporting me so that we can move forward as a family. I'm hoping to find out whether my baby is at risk of abnormalities considering my infrequent use. I am aware I have put them in a dangerous situation and am ridden with guilt... Is my baby likely to be ok?

Brief Answer:
Your baby is likely to be OK

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns about health of baby due to drugs.

Following is my reply :

1) It is good to know that you are trying to kick the habit. Continue the good effort for baby's sake.

2) Occasional use you mentioned may not have affected the baby. Your baby is likely to be OK.

3) Fortunately this can be tested and confirmed by simple ultrasound scan done on 12th and 20th week of pregnancy.

4) These 2 scans will confirm if there is anything abnormal and put your mind at ease.

I hope I answered your concerns.

Let me know if you need anymore help.
