What Are The Risks Of Developing HIV When Exposed To Blood With Abrasion?

default
Posted on Fri, 11 Mar 2016
Question: How accurate is gen 4 p24 antigen testing at 7 days. I came into contact with someone else's blood on my hands which had some scrapes. I've been vaccinated for hep B. Got tested for hep C and hiv after 7 days. Still worried. Almost all articles I've found are about the sexual transmission of these diseases so I haven't been able to get any accurate assessment of my risk to exposure. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
HIV Transmission risk is negligible

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.
Transmission risk of HIV through non sexual route like contact with blood even with abraded fingers is almost negligible.
P24 antigen test and test for HCV a week after are not conclusive.

What are the general timelines for testing for these viruses (Hep C and HIV) that could provide conclusive results? What approximate level of accuracy could be expected, also what kind of tests are recommended? It's been almost a month since my possible exposure incident. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
HIV 1 annd 2 can be ruled out by 12 weeks after the exposre with rapid test

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM BACK.
HIV Antigen detecting tests (PCR, P 24 antigen test, part of 4th generation test) will become reliable within 4 weeks after the exposure but can confirm the status for HIV 1 Infection only whereas 4th geneartion test or any other rapid or ELISA test(antibody detection test) will be conclusive after the window period (12 weeks) and confirm the status for both HIV 1and 2. HCV test also will be reliable after 3-4 months after the exposure.
