Question: Worry about getting Gestational Trophoblastic Disease.

I am now at age 40, my last menstrual date was 29 March 2015 and I was diagnosed a missed miscarriage at around Week 9 in XXXXXXX 2015 and took medicine cytotec, but follow up ultrasound examination reviewed that miscarriage was incomplete and D&C surgery was done on 7 July 2015, my Dr. took follow up ultrasound check on 14 July 2015 and commented that some abnormal image was found and worried there might have remaining gestational tissues in my uterus, and on the same day I had blood hcg test and the result was 204, my Dr. worried that I might have gestational trophoblastic disease, he again prescribed cyctotec and put in my vagina and asked me to come back to clinic on 23 July 2015. After taking cytotec, i got vaginal breeding for nearly 7 days with some clot blood discharge. Can you please help with any suggestion / diagnosis? Also, after miscarriage, when will blood hcg return to normal level? And what should be the normal blood hcg level?

Brief Answer:
Trophoblastic disease is less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
After a miscarriage it is common to have some retained products in the uterus or blood clots. After taking Cytotec since the clots have come out it is best to have a repeat ultrasound scan to be sure that the uterus is empty.
After a miscarriage the blood HCG levels usually fall to less than 25 mIU/ml after 2 weeks. This is not likely to be a trophoblastic disease if the HCG levels fall and the uterine cavity is empty on your next visit.
In case there are any retained products in the uterus then it is best to go for a D&C and biopsy of the tissue to be sure about the diagnosis.
