Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: HI XXXXXXX Page (age 79)
I am pre diabetic (managing with diet) and taking Ramipril &Amlodipine. I also have a post nasal drip the I have also been managing with diet. However I did take a Claritin, which cleared my head but also caused me to urinate every half hour through the night and also seemed to increase the leg cramps I sometimes have.
Thank you for your advise.

Brief Answer:
Claritin affects on bladder are not reported

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Claritin (loratidine is the generic) is not known to cause affects on bladder and muscles. However it can dehydrate a person further.

Further I tried to search if this drug interacts with Ramipril or Amlodipine and found nothing significant that can alter the regular routine.

I think frequent urination is a new symptom may not be related to this Claritin. Since you visited the bathroom many more times than usual it lead to leg cramps.

I still suggest you to stop Claritin and check if the symptoms resolve. If the symptoms resolve it could be a minor interaction which was not reported in the literature. Medical Literature are written testing on average age people so they cannot be specific for individuals over 70 yrs.

If the symptoms do not resolve this should be considered as new symptom and further testing by your primary care. Prostate enlargement is to be noted and may not require any intervention now.

If you do not have further inquiry and clear about my opinion you may close the discussion.

Thank you for the response. I know muscle cramps are in some cases related to dehydration and that could very well have been the cause. The excessive urination has never happened before and it has ceased as of this morning. Prostate was remove several years ago and there has been no sign of cancer return. I have only taken the Claritin twice a few days apart and the reaction the first time was much less - I will stop.
