Question: When can one discontinue ebexid?
I am taking this last few years. Went through pregnancy and delivery. All went well. Now wondering when should I be able to stop it as I am far and cannot consult with the doctor who, prescribed it initially. Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
EBEXID

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

EBEXID is a preparation which contains: Thyroid & Tocopheryl (Vitamin E),     some Vitamin B-complexes like Thiamine, Riboflavine, Nicotinamide, Pyridoxine & calcium pantothenate. One need not not take EBEXID indefinitely as it contains thyroid extract. You need to undergo Thyroid function tests(TFT) like Serum T3, T4 & TSH and if TFT is normal, you should discontinue Ebexid. Repeat TFT after 08 weeks.

If TFT is abnormal, indicating hypo or hyper thyroidism, you need to consult your doctor.

Moreover Standard textbook of Medicine does not advocate administration of such kind of preparation.

Brief Answer:
EBEXID -follow-up query

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Your Thyroid function tests( freeT3, free T4 and TSH) are normal i.e. you are Euthyroid. You should discontinue tablet EBEXID with its vague indications.
However you should also undergo serum calcium & Bone mineral density (BMD),as prolonged administration of EBEXID can cause osteopenia & osteoporosis.
Repeat Thyroid function tests( freeT3, free T4 and TSH) after 08 weeks to make sure that you remain euthyroid.

Thank you doctor. That is indeed helpful. Will do the tests serum calcium and bmd after some months.
One last clarification which will help me decide:
1. Am out of country until October 2015. So, can do the serum calcium and bmd tests only once am back.
2. Am thinking of trying to conceive 2nd baby

Q: keeping in view the above aspects, must I discontinue ebexid right away or should wait.....or. kindly suggest please.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
yes, you can do the tests after your return

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Serum calcium and BMD can be undertaken as you return if you don't have any symptoms like bone pain etc.
You should discontinue EBEXID straight away ;for that matter any preparation which does not specify its thyroid hormone content e.g. levothyroxine 25 mcg etc.
Although desiccated animal thyroid preparations (thyroid extract USP) are available, they are not recommended because the ratio of T3 to T4 is non-physiologic.
Once you conceive ,your gynecologist again will carry out TFT and advise you accordingly.
