default
Posted on Mon, 4 May 2015
Question: I have had Type 2 diabetes for 22 years with the onset at age 50. My A1c has been about 6.5 for the last 5yrs. I am not on insulin but take these oral medications for diabetes : glyburide, metformin, and januvia. I take actos ocassionally. My question is whether the benefits of taking actos outweigh any additional risks of developing bladder cancer. Don Sweeney, YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
Pioglitazone (actos) and bladder cancer controversy is no more.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. The new 10 year study result by takeda states that there is no association of pioglitazone with bladder cancer. Earlier the data given by them about actos and bladder controversy is disproved now (by themselves). So the question about outweighing risk has no significance now.
You can see the article in medscape : www.medscape.com/viewarticle/831128 .

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
