Brief Answer:
Sizodon is risperidone

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I understand your concerns but don't worry. Risperidone is many a times used for ASD (Autistic spectrum disorders) in children.

It's an antipsychotic medications used to treat symptoms of irritability in ASD.

Some of the common side effects associated with risperidone are: headache; dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling; tremors, twitching or uncontrollable muscle movements; agitation, anxiety, restless feeling; depressed mood; dry mouth, upset stomach, constipation; weight gain; or pain in arms or legs and occasional allergic reaction.

Avoid extremes of temperature as body becomes prone to dehydration, overheating and cold injuries with extremes of temperature. Give plenty of fluids orally to maintain hydration.

The dose should be strictly guided by treating doctors. I recommend my patients of this age group to start with 0.25 mg orally once a day. The dose can be increased to 0.5 mg orally per day after a week depending upon the response.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.
Take care

Thanks for the above information.

Please also let me know Doctor, whether risperidone can be discontinued (gradually, as the consulting psychiatrist told me) after some time?

Usually how long does it take to show positive effects on the child? and are the mentioned side effects very common with all patients??

The doctor said 3 drops to start with which can be increased to as many as 30 drops. Is it safe dosage?

I'm really very worried about starting this medicine, as my child falls sick every month and I'm worried about her general health.

Kindly help with the information as I'm really anxious about the adverse effects.

Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Risperidone dose should be strictly measured and monitored

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Risperidone is used for children suffering from ASD if their behavior is very aggressive, self harming or hyper active which is not getting relieved by behavioural therapy.

Since the drug can lead to side effects especially extra pyramidal I.e. tremors, dystonias, muscle spasms, ataxia, the dose needs to be very strictly monitored by the treating physician. It is not advisable to give in measurement of drops as advised by your doctor. The doses are as I mentioned earlier. It's usually safe if given properly. I would recommend you to take her to a child psychotherapist who can try behavioural therapy along with proper administration and monitoring of risperidone in case it's needed.

Most kids start showing improvement in 2-3 weeks. Once the child improves, the drug can tapered and stopped on doctor's advice.

Hopefully this will help you. Don't worry, she will be fine.

Thank you so much for the details. I will definitely follow your advice and consult a child psychotherapist.

Just one final thing. Does this medicine helps the child to concentrate on studies better? And after stopping the medicine can the hyperactivity relapse?

Kindly advice.

Thanking you,

Brief Answer:
Yes, it may help in making him more attentive to studies

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Risperidone can help him by making him more attentive and thus may help in studies.

Some cases do have relapses which require its repeat administration. But a good behavioral therapy will be long lasting. So, learn to deal with such relapses with the help of psychotherapist.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any future health related questions.

Take care
