What Are The Side Effects Of Spironolactone?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: I recently went to my daughters very elegant engagement party. I do not drink or take any illegal drugs. I quit drinking about two years ago. I started a new medicine the day before the party. The party was at 2pm. I took 50mg of Spironolactone about noon. When I got to the party I was a complete mess. I could not stay awake and I felt like I was on some type of downer. Every one swears I was high and I was not. What does this sound like to you? No one believes me due to issues with alcohol in the past.

Brief Answer:
possibility of hypo tension (low blood pressure) and drowsiness due to drug

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern.

From your history it seems that it is likely due to side effect of spironolactone. It can cause reduction in blood pressure and drowsiness as common side effects. It also can cause electrolyte disturbance if used regularly.

You had taken tablet just before 2 hours prior to party and that is also first time. No history of any alcohol or drug intake. This means drug is likely responsible for your symptoms. It is sometime used for acne and skin changes due to hormonal disturbance fin perimenopausal symptoms.

Before starting the drug blood pressure and electrolytes should be checked.

If you are taking any other drug let me know.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.
Regards,

I also take Cymbalta and Amytriptyline could this mixed with the other cause these crazy reactions? I really need an answer to these questions. I do not want to be accused of relapsing. I am going to school and have been for the last year and doing good. I had finally won every ones trust back and now once again I have screwed it all up. I was so excited about meeting my new inlaws. It would be one thing if I did relapse, but that's not the case. I need somebody to see what is going in instead of thinking I am reverting back to old behavior. I am in school these days and would not be able to do this if I were back on drugs.

Are the other two drugs I mentioned above causing any of this so called wacky behavior? Please read paragraph above?

Brief Answer:
significant drug interactions are there

Detailed Answer:
Hi Dear,

Thanks for information.

Yes there are significant possible drug interactions.

Spironolactone will increase the level or effect of amitriptyline by P-glycoprotein (MDR1) efflux transporter.
Spironolactone and amitriptyline may have additive effects in lowering your blood pressure. You may experience headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and/or changes in pulse or heart rate. These side effects are most likely to be seen at the beginning of treatment, following a dose increase, or when treatment is restarted after an interruption.
So this was likely happened in your case.

Treatment with Duloxetine may occasionally cause blood sodium levels to get too low, a condition known as hyponatremia, and using it with spironolactone can increase that risk.

Using amitriptyline together with Duloxetine can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome. However if you are taking both drugs since long, no need to worry for the same.

In conclusion you need to discuss for stopping spironolactone with your doctor.

Take care.
