Question: I am a 41 year old man with no history of heart issues. For the past 8 months I have been taking a baby aspirin daily ( to prevent risk of future stroke or heartvattack) is that safe for me to continue taking the baby asprins daily or do I need to stop taking them. I have heard that stopping my daily aspirins could lead to a heart attack ?

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that considering the fact that you have no cardiovascular risk factors (no obesity, no diabetes, no hypertension, no dyslipidemia, no family history), there is no reason to take aspirin.

So, you can stop it cold turkey without any problem.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Thank you Doctor for your quick and professional reply.

As a follow up question can I safely continue to take the baby aspirins daily as a preventative measure to keep plaque out of my veins and to prevent future strokes or heart attacks? My father (75) has been taking them for almost 20 years. He too has no heart issues

My opinion as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Regarding your concern, I would not recommend baby aspirin daily as a preventive measure.

There is no data evidence based efficacy of baby aspirin in such cases.

Considering the adverse effects of aspirin compared to its hypothetical benefits in your clinical situation (with no risk factors), I would recommend not to take it.

You can start it only if there is evidence of the presence of atherosclerosis (like atherosclerotic plaques on the cervical or limb Doppler ultrasound).

Hope to have clarified some of your uncertainties!

Wishing good health,

Hi Dr. Iliri

Thank you for your explanation, that has helped me a lot, i will be stopping taking the baby aspirins right away.

My final follow up question is that i am also taking magnesium tablets daily too (Doctor's Best High Absorption Magnesium Dietary Supplement, 200 mg ), i was under the impression that taking magnesium was good for heart health. Should i stop taking the magnesium supplements as well?. I will be stopping the baby aspirins today

Sorry for all the questions, this is the last one :-)

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Magnesium supplements are good for your muscles and help improve the physical performance.

Besides, they do not have the same adverse effects like aspirin.

That is why, I would recommend taking them time after time, during the periods that you feel fatigue or when you have a lot of work to do.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Wishing all the best,

Dr. Iliri
