What Are The Side Effects Of Interproximal Reduction?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: Hi, My upper front teeth are not aligned properly. So I wanted go for braces treatment. I visited an orthodontist in XXXXXXX He examined my teeth and told that there is no sufficient gap between the teeth to adjust and asked me to remove 2 teeth to get gap. so that he can aligned the teeth with braces.

But I'm not willing to remove the healthier teeth, so he gave me another option that is IPR (inter-proximal reduction). In this, he trims 0.5mm (0.25 on each side of the teeth) for each of my upper front 6 teeth (321|123).

Please suggest me, is it a good idea to get IPR for 6 teeth (0.5mm each). what are the side effects of IPR in the long run? please suggest me advantages and disadvantages of IPR.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Proximal stripping, sensitivity, extraction

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query.
As far as your malaligned teeth is concerned, it is better to go for extraction and then go for orthodontic treatment, since the proximal stripping can result in sensitivity in future.

So consult a good orthodontist and take one more opinion. If more space is required to move the teeth then extraction is the only option. If it is very less space to be closed then you can go for proximal stripping.

The main disadvantage of proximal stripping is sensitivity. I would advise you to go for extraction rather than proximal stripping.

You can take an opinion at Dr XXXXXXX Dental Health care centre, consult orthodontist there (Dr. XXXXXXX Joseph) since you are telling you are in XXXXXXX

I hope my answer will help you. Take care.

Thanks for the quick reply.

If I have to go with extraction of teeth, 4 teeth would be removed (2 upper. 2 lower).
Won't it cause any problems in the future having 24 teeth (I haven't got wisdom teeth yet) instead of 28 teeth? (I've attached some pics of my teeth, please have a look)

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
extraction, orthodontist, analysis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.

I have gone through your images. As per the images you have lot of crowding (mal aligned). So you might have to go for extraction of the first premolars in all 4 quadrants. Nothing to worry about number of teeth. 24 teeth are sufficient to perform the chewing function. You consult a good orthodontist and take an opinion. They will take measurement of your teeth and do some analysis which determines exactly whether you have to go for extraction or not. Regarding the third molars, these are non functional teeth, they might be present inside the bone. So get a radiograph like orthopantomograph to confirm it.

I hope I have answered your query. Take care.
