Question: hello doctor
I am suffering from rednesss and swelling on meatus. I am facing this problem 3rd time in last 3 months.Initially this problem started when i applied soap on penis for cleaning purpose.I visited to an urologist.Urologist said this is an chemical urethritis and it is soap induced. So he prescribed Soframycin at that time.Swelling and redness went away on applying Soframycin for 7 days. After few days, Redness and swelling came again and again i stated applying soframycin. Now this is the 3rd time i am facing the same problem again. It reoccured 3 days ago. Today i visited to same urologist
Urologist said it is reoccuring again. So you should go to a skin specialist. Then i visited to skin specialist.Skin specialist diagnosed the affected area and asked that did u take any drug 3 days ago. I said yes i had taken the combination of Pentaprazole and Domeperidome 3 days ago. Skin specialist said it's an allergic reaction due to the administration of Pentaprazole and Domeperidome. So Skin Specialist prescribed the following medicine
1. Levocitrizine 10mg for 10 days
2. Allegra 180mg for 10 days
3. T-Bact Ointment
4. Tab Prednisolone 10 mg for 10 days ( for first 5 days 2 times in days and for next 5 days once in a day)
I asked skin specialist not to prescribe the steroid but he said if u would not take the steroid then this probelm comes again and again
Doctor Is it safe to take prednisolone? i am hesitating to take prednisolone as it is a steroid and we all know steroid has lagre number of side effects. Doctor please let me know any safe alternative of steroid for this problem.

Brief Answer:
A short course of oral steroid is safe

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone throuh your query in detail and i understand that you are concerned about side effects of oral steroids.

Assuming that your dermatologist has diagnosed it correctly as an Allergic reaction to drugs there is no harm in taking oral steroids for a duration as short as a week or 10 days.

A short course of oral steroids limited to 2-3 weeks is absolutely safe if a medical condition desires them to be adminstered.
Side effects are common with longer courses of oral steroids not with shorter courses such as up to 2-3 weeks.

However, if you don't want to take oral steroids you can ask your doctor to prescribe a suitable topical steroid cream for application on affected area. That should also work fine.

Is there any antibiotic that can be used as an alternative of Prednisolone steroid?

Answered by Dr. Dr. Kakkar (7 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Topical steroid cream is an alternative to Oral steroids

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Antibiotic is not an alternative to prednislone. These are 2 different types of drugs and have entirely different indications.
You may ask your doctor to substitute prednisolone with a topical steroid cream. I think that is possible.

Brief Answer:
Mupirocin should be applied twice daily

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Mupirocin ointment should be applied twice daily. It is an ointment base therefore would not get completely washed off by urinary stream.
However, make sure you leave it for sometime i.e at least 1 hour before you urinate.
