Question: Hi, my son is 2.5 years old and had a recent malarial fever followed by cold and congestion. Doctor has given nucast 4 syrup for 2 months daily 5 ml at night. Will such long dose have some side effect on lever or his health in long run?

Brief Answer:wWell tolerated

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic. Nukast contains levocetirizine 5 mg and montelukast 10 mg. It is a widely used medicine and can be taken safely for long duration without any worries. The only demerit of levocetirizine is that it can cause sleepiness but if tolerated, is harmless otherwise. No long term adverse effects on health or growth.

Let me mention that any medicine or even food has to be metabolised/detoxified by the liver and although it is well tolerated, it is an unnecessary burden. I feel that after initial course of 10 days, if the child is otherwise doing fine, giving the medicine on off-and-on doses as and when required, would be a better idea.
