What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Tramadol And Suboxone?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 May 2017
Question: Hi,
Can I take 100mg of Tramadol after not taking 8mg of Suboxone for 24 hours? Is it safe will there be any side effects? I am weaning down off the suboxone due to it's not helping my pain and the tramadol seems too.

Brief Answer:
may need to wait another 24 hours if possible

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Suboxone is a combination of 2 medications, naloxone and buprenorphine.

The half life of the buprenorphine is 24 to 42 hours and naloxone 2 to 12. The half life of a medication is the time it takes for the amount of medication in the system to decrease by half.
It takes 3 to 5 half lives for a medication to be mostly eliminated.

This means that after 24 hours, the amount of suboxone in your body may be halved but you would still have a significant amount present.
It may be best if possible to wait another 24 hours before starting the tramadol to avoid any interaction.

By that time, at least 2 half lives may have passed

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

I am in a good amount of pain that is why I asked so it is hard to not take the Tramadol, I have taken Advil and that isn't relieving my pain either, I was wondering if If I did take a tramadol tonight would there be serious interactions between the suboxone still being in my system and the tramadol? I have really bad osteoarthris in both Knees as well as neck fusion that was done about 8 years ago but I experience pain daily. I do know what you mean about waiting but if I got to the point where I couldn't would I be alright?

Brief Answer:
if pain severe and no alternative , would need to monitor

Detailed Answer:
HI

If the pain is severe and you are not able to bear it, then you can take the tramadol.

Buprenorphine (one of the ingredients in suboxone) mixed with tramdol can increase risks of seizures, cause extreme drowsiness, affect breathing and heart rate. Unfortunately it is not possible to predict who would or wouldn't have these issues

The amount of buprenorphine would be halved after 24 hours (half life 24 to 42) but some of it would still be in your system

You would need to monitor for any issues or have a family member or friend monitor

Please feel free to ask ask anything else

Hi Ok Thank you I should be able to bare the pain until tomorrow, I will try and wait the 42 hours it sounds like if I wait another 24 hours that I should be ok with little or hopefully no reactions is that correct? After the 42-48 hours can I just be on the tramadol and not have to take the Suboxone because I really do not want to be on the suboxone any longer and don't want to go through withdrawals from it either will the tramadol prevent me from going through suboxone withdrawals once I start the tramadol on a regular basis?

Thank You so much for your help.

Brief Answer:
additional 24 hours should be fine

Detailed Answer:
HI

Sorry about the delayed reply, after the additional 24 hours, the amount in your body should be very low since at least 2 half lives of the medication would have been gone.

I really hope that you have relief from your pain
