Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder characterized by alternating mood of depression with mania. The mood can switch from feeling elation or being overly happy where you feel like your on top of the world. You may do things that are highly risky, spend money that you don't have or get in trouble with the law. Then you may feel severely depressed and suicidal not wanting to do anything and finding any pleasure in life.
