What Are The Symptoms Of Diffuse Cerebral Atrophy?

This is the case history of my 5 year old son Aayush who is suffering from some neurological problem. Since I am in a remote area where proper medical facility in this specialized area is not available that’s why I m sending you this mail and seek your valuable suggestion and guidance.
CASE DATAILS
On 15/12/2010a seizure attach was observed with my son while he was in school .i immediately contact with a pediatrician, after first aid he recommended CT SCAN & EEG test.
CT SAN was normal while EEG was abnormal. (Reports are attached herewith). He recommended two medicine as sodium valproate oral solution 200mg(5ml) and liv 52 (2.5ml). these two medicines are continuously being fed to him since then.
But again on 27/05/2011 a seizure attach was observed in his attach his right side hand was vibrating and after even normalizing from attack his right hand & leg was inactive for at least 30 minutes. My doctor recommended MRI BRAIN test.
which shows that there are mild DIFFUSE CEREBRAL ATROPHY.
After counseling with my son , doctor says that he is not very sure that this is the case of DIFFUSE CEREBRAL ATROPHY. But he recommended following medicine as sodium valproate oral solution 200mg(7.5ml) and liv 52 (2.5ml) and MENTAT ( 5ml Himalaya drug company )
My son is an average student of UKG of a CBSE board school. He is having some speaking problem specially grammatically he is not too much interested in studying but when anybody sit with him he is ready to learn
Actually he was a premature borned baby and was very weak since birth (Present wt 12 kg. at the time of birth 1.65 kg) so hr was kept in close watch he is social with all near and dear only.
I need your help
1—In recognizing that my son is suffering with DIFFUSE CEREBRAL ATROPHY
2—is there some other test which conform that he is actually suffering from DIFFUSE CEREBRAL ATROPHY
3—if he is suffering from DIFFUSE CEREBRAL ATROPHY, what is its cure?
4--- the medicine being given to him is just enough ?
5—what behavioral and psychological recommendations are for him?
6—the precaution in their eating habits ?

Thanks for the query.
Firstly your baby was born premature and weak since birth.
This is the reason for brain to be small and it will pick up slowly as the baby grows.
This is seen on MRI as diffuse cerebral atrophy. Sometimes people with small brain can have seizures.
The baby is having focal seizures which are coming from the left side of the brain and hence he is jerking the right hand. Valaprin is a good medicine. It has to be given as per the body weight. If it is less seizures can recur.
If this does not control the fits , then medicine has to be changed. Let me know few things like
1. Body weight
2. Baby's development
3. Is he right or left handed
4. Weakness of right or left side of body
5. EEG report in detail.
I will get back to you once i get these and suggest appropriately.
Valaprin causes weight gain. So you should not give high calorie food. You have to train the child so that it can catch up with other children like speaking, cognitive stimulation and physiotherapy if required.

These are the answer of your queries, let me know very honestly that this problem is genetic(can transfer from one generation to another) AND is it possible that brain can grow upto normal babies through medicines
1- baby's weight is about 12 kg
2- baby's physical development is average. but in his schooling he is slightly slow.

He is suffering from symptomatic generalised epilepsy.
The medicine which you are giving is good for this kind of epilepsy. But for 12 kg baby the dose is inadequate. Increase the dose if seizures occur.
This is not a genetic epilepsy. This is acquired epilepsy i.e., occuring after birth. Once epilepsy is fully controlled with the medicines the brain starts growing again and will reach near normal (but not 100%).
So to make it near 100 %, you have to XXXXXXX a child psychologist who will teach cognitive stimulation techniques and do the same. I hope you got the answer.
