What Are The Symptoms Of Genital Herpes?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Feb 2015
Question: I am thinking that I have contracted genital herpes. I believe the virus was contracted from a previous girlfriend in which the relationship ended about 7 months ago. The first outbreak occurred about a month ago in the pubic hair region at the base of the penis on the side. I went to the dr and was told that it couldn't be tested without having "vesicles". There were vesicles in a small bunch (about half an inch in diameter) wich turned into sores which healed a couple weeks later. The same symptoms have returned, but in several spots of the pubic hair region. Started out as "raised areas" which turned into sores which are currently healing, although still open after almost 2 weeks. I went to the dr. this time as well, but no vesicles. The dr prescribed an anibiotic for "dermatitis". (Doxy-cycline). after 1 week there was another area to break out. I called and was prescribed Biaxin, as it was taken the first time for a sinus infection and the sores seemed to clear up. After a few days of this antibiotic there is no change worth mentioning. I have been under a lot of stress from work during the holiday season. Do you believe this is herpes? After two dr. visits and no tests done, I am very anxious to know something...anything.

Thank you for query. I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query.

I have gone through the description.
If your doctor has seen and prescribed antibiotic treatment, it may not be herpes.
The distribution of lesions does not point towards herpes.

So it is unlikely to be herpes. But I would request you upload images so I can you give you better guidance and confirmation
It may be folliculitis.
Wear loose cotton inner wears.
Do not trim hair too short.
See that there is no friction.
You can get back with clear photos.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely herpes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.

I have gone through the photos.

It does not appear like herpes. Usually herpes lesions heal sooner and do not persist for long.

It may be due to folliculitis .
If they persist you can ask for smear, or biopsy too.

You can go for hsv1 & 2 antibodies test (IGG).

You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you

Did you see the multiple areas? There are less reddened areas on the pubic region above the base of the penis and the other side as well. I wasn't sure if you were able to zoom in and assess them. The most reddened sores were agitated by friction. Is there any topical application that may help. I have been using a steroid cream as well as triple antibiotic ointment. I was wondering if I should let it dry out rather than apply the ointment. This has shown up and worsened/spread over the past 2 weeks. It was initially one area (the most reddened one). The area on the lower right (my right) showed up next, and the areas directly above the penis followed

Hi
Thank you for follow up query.

Yes I have seen multiple red areas in the pubic region.
Please stop applying steroid cream. It will worsen if bacterial infection. It will hamper healing too.

Apply only antibiotic creams like Mupirocin ( T-Bact)or fucidin cream for now.
Hope you do not have any symptoms.

You can get back for any clarification
Thank you
