What Are The Symptoms Of Genital Warts?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Oct 2015
Question: Hello, about 7 years ago I got diagnosed with genital warts. Since then, the warts have not reappeared and my last Pap smear that was done last year came normal and negative for HPV. After getting the warts, I was given the HPV shot. However, last week, I had sex with a new partner. We did use a condom, but afterwards I did not a wart near his thigh. I am worried that I will get warts again. What are the chances? Even though my tests came negative about a year ago, and considering that I was vaccinated?

Brief Answer:
Chances of developing warts are there

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. The chances of getting genital warts are there in your case, if you have had a contact with the partner with genital warts.
The HPV vaccine protects against the cancer causing HPV strains ( HPV strains 16 and 18), while the genital warts are mostly caused by HPV strains 6 and 11.
The HPV testing also mostly tests the cancer causing HPV strains like16 and 18.
Moreover, genital warts are highly infectious and the sexual partner gets easily infected.
There is no way to prevent the risk of genital warts, if you have an exposure to it.
However, the chances of developing warts after exposure is not100%, so you have to wait and watch. If warts develop, then take the treatment at the earliest.

Thank you for reply. I thought that the vaccine protected against warts as well.. Could it be possible that the wart-like bump I saw on my partner is something else other than a wart? Because it was not in the genital area, more on the upper leg, close to the thigh..it was the only one I saw.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
He should get evaluated by a dermatologist

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, the lesion on your partner's upper leg may or may not be a genital wart. He can consult a dermatologist for proper examination and treatment accordingly.
The genital warts are highly contagious, so if your skin has contacted the lesion, you can also develop it.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
