What Are The Withdrawal Symptoms Of Oxycodone?

default
Posted on Sat, 13 Aug 2016
Question: I've been taking Oxcodone 5-325 for four months due to back issues. I would take 3-4 daily but only in the evening and near bedtime. I began experiencing what seems like withdrawal symptoms in the morning and afternoon, after the last dose wore off and time for "my" scheduled evening doses.

My doctor prescribed Hysingla ER 20mg. The thought being, that I wouldn't go through the ups and downs of taking the Oxy the way I was. I'm a little nervous that withdrawal symptoms will continue until I adjust to the Hysingla. Should I be concerned?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, opioids were never intended to be used for more than a few weeks at a time, because pain actually gets worse over time with opioid use. It appears you have been on oxycodone for much too long, and have developed an addiction, and physiological tolerance. Your doctor's decision to switch to a long-acting medication is a good first step, though it should be your goal to get off opioids entirely.

The Hysingla ER 20mg is an equivalent dose to what you were taking, so you should not experience withdrawal from it. You should be fine.

Doctor,
At this point, I am going to start the Hysingla ER tomorrow. I'm returning to work on Monday after being out six weeks due to spinal surgery on XXXXXXX 7th. Is there a "best" time of day to start this med?

Detailed Answer:
You're most welcome. There is no particular time of day to take this med, usually most people take it in the morning.
