Based on the cause , thyroiditis can be treated with NSAIDS like aspirin especially in subacute thyroiditis which is common in middle age women after a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. In case of hypothyroidism with thyroiditis, thyroid hormone replacement and steroids for short term may also be needed to cool down the thyroid. Full recovery is expected within several weeks to months.
