What Can Be The Repercussions Of Taking Wrong Dosage Of Glipizide?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jan 2016
Question: I forgot to take my 1/2 glipizide today. I went to take my evening pills and took the 1/2 glip by mistake. My blood sugar was just now 219. Should I stay up for a while to make sure my blood sugar doesn't go to low. I ate soup and sandwich at 7:00 p.m. I'm a bit nervous about this.

night time reading suppose to be greater than 126 - 140

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

You do not have to stay up any longer than usual.

(1)You normally take the glipizide daily for blood sugar control, this means that in a 24 hour period, this medication plays a role in helping to keep these levels normal. If you had used a higher dose than normal accidentally then this would be concerning.

(2)According to guidelines, the night time blood sugar of at least 140 before bed (according to Joslin Diabetes) is associated with a decreased risk of an episode

Some persons recommend 126

With blood sugar of 219 , you would be considered very safe

(3)In addition, glipizide time for maximum action is 1 to 3 hours for the immediate release tablet (there is also an extended release tablet).
This means that it would have maximum effect 1 to 3 hours after taking it though it would still be present in the system after this time.

(4)if you are still concerned, you can use a snack - a mix of carbohydrate and protein since protein is broken down very slowly and would stay for a long time

Eg peanut butter and crackers
Cheese and fruit etc

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
