What Can Cause A Late Period But Negative Pregnancy Test?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: I am going on day 5 of no period. I have kept up with each cycle using an app and I'm always on point. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests with all being negative. We also used the pull out method each time. Could I still be pregnant?

Brief Answer:
Wait for a week for periods

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
I understand your anxiety related to the issue.
I would like to know if you took any emergency pill like ipill or unwanted 72.
Also please tell me your usual cycle length and maximum variation in periods or if there has been recent change in trend in your schedule like a new exercise routine or a diet plan.
As the pregnancy tests are negative the chances of pregnancy are low but cannot be negated as you have history of unprotected sexual activity because in case there was a delay in ovulation, pregnancy test results are also delayed positive.
So best option for you right now is to wait for periods for another week and in case you still don't get them then take progesterone pills for withdrawal of periods.
Waiting for your response.
Regards
Dr Manisha.

No, I have not taken an emergency pill or anyrhing of that nature. My cycle length ranges from 27-29 days and I'm now on day 32. I'm always right on schedule. The last time my period was off like this was when I was pregnant with my daughter, but i did not test with her until I was a month past due on my period. Also, I have experienced slight cramping mainly on my right side, gas, bloating, frequent urination that wakes me up, and indigestion. My cramps with my menstural cycle is usually hard cramps that are felt down in my legs, but I haven't experienced those.

Brief Answer:
Wait for another week for periods

Detailed Answer:
These cramps are basically because of the missing periods and might also give you bloating sensation along with indigestion.
But all these symptoms are also present in early pregnancy so both of these cannot be differentiated from each other.
Best option for you right now is to wait for another week and then repeat pregnancy test and in case still negative then you will need to take progesterone pills for withdrawal of periods.
I understand your confusion that you have always been on time for periods but many a times there occurs delay in periods without any underlying cause and that has nothing serious to worry about.
But in case this delay pattern continues in upcoming months too then you will need ultrasound examination to delineate the cause.
But in present sceniario there seems no risk of pregnancy.
All the best.
