Posted on Fri, 8 Mar 2019
Question: I have suddenly started having painful bulging veins in my arms when hanging down. It is intermittent and my main other condition is chronic neck pain with soreness in my neck and shoulder blades.. also a tight jaw. The bulging veins are not constant... they come and go and i can sometimes relate it to when my neck is hurting more. It started in my left hand but now is in my right and left.. the right is mainly arm vein that goes toward the thumb... left is mainly the veins on the back of my hand.

more information. Non-smoker... don't drink.. fairly active but work out less since i had my gallbladder removed in 2015. Headaches frequently from the neck pain.

Brief Answer:
Possible neurological compression at cervical spine level.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the presentation indicates an underlying issue at cervical spine level.

* The reasons to support this are
- chronic pain over neck and shoulder blades
- both upper limb discomfort

* The bulging of veins seem non-specific as it is not constant.

* My guidelines at present
- Basic work out with exercises involving wrist, elbow, shoulder joints of both upper limbs (as per the pain allowance).
- Alternate ice pack and heating pad application over painful areas.
- Analgesic intake in the form of Tylenol if no history of
sensitivity to paracetamol as per the pain level.
- Discuss with your doctor regarding the need for x-ray and MRI of the cervical spine for in-depth evaluation.
- Keep your blood sugar, BP levels under control.

Hope this information will be useful for you.

Welcome for further guidance in relation to above.

Wish you a fine recovery.

Thank you very much. Two more questions and I'll leave you alone. I have a home traction device .. water bag with pulley. I only put about 6 lbs in it and feel relief somewhat after using it. Would you recommend to continue that? Also, would you recommend chiropractic care?

I have had an x-ray of my neck and have multiple C vertebrae issues. Only two have no issues. Mainly bulging discs. History of 3 concussions.. two in the military. Thanks again for your time. Have a great night.

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

* I recommend traction devices at home only after thorough evaluation of x-ray reports and physiotherapist suggestions. So if you have undergone already the same and advised to do the same, should go for that, otherwise not.
* Certified chiropractor is a good helping hand for the issue.
* Would like to have the insight of your x-ray report (done previously) at your time convenience.

Hope I have answered your query.
